Howard beats Savannah State, 50-48

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) James Carlton scored 16 points and added nine rebounds to help lead Howard to a 50-48 win over Savannah State on Saturday.

Khaleen Pinkett's jumper pulled Savannah State even at 47 with 2:17 to play, but Howard hit three of four free throws down the stretch to close out the Tigers, who finished without a field goal following the Pinkett jumper. Savannah State had one final opportunity to win, but a Jarvis Jenkins 3-pointer missed with two seconds left.

The win was Howard's first ever over the Tigers, having lost the previous four matchups all-time.

James Daniel finished with 15 points for the Bison (14-13, 8-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), who had just 11 total field goals but got to the free throw line 36 times. Overall the teams combined for 30 field goals and 42 total turnovers.

Terel Hall had nine points for Savannah State (6-19, 2-9).
