WACO, Texas (AP) West Virginia leading scorer Juwan Staten didn't play Saturday at No. 19 Baylor because of a knee injury, and the Mountaineers lost their team captain less than 3 minutes into the game.

Staten wasn't in uniform during pregame warmups for the No. 20 Mountaineers, and school officials said he wouldn't play because of a left knee problem.

Gary Browne, another senior guard and the team captain, left the game with a lower leg injury. Browne was hurt with 17:21 left in the first half while going for a loose ball.

Rico Gathers, Baylor's 275-pound post player, slid going for the ball and rolled onto the left leg of West Virginia's 195-pound guard. Browne immediately rolled over and grabbed his leg in obvious pain. He was helped off the court and later returned to the bench wearing warmups.

Staten, fifth in the Big 12 with 14.5 points a game, apparently got hurt in a win over Texas on Tuesday night, when he scored seven points in 34 minutes.

Staten left the Texas game for unknown reasons, but re-entered and finished. Coach Bob Huggins indicated to WVU's radio crew Saturday that Staten had a combination of a groin injury and swelling in the knee.
