Detroit rallies in second half past Youngstown State 77-67

DETROIT (AP) Chris Jenkins scored 21 points and Juwan Howard Jr. added 20 to help No. 5 seed Detroit beat eighth-seeded Youngstown State 77-67 on Tuesday in the first round of the Horizon League tournament.

Detroit went on a 15-7 run, with nine points by Jenkins, to knot the game at 59 with eight minutes left. The game was tied at 63 and 65 before Jenkins gave Detroit its first lead of the game, 67-65, with two free throws with 3:21 left.

Detroit scored the next 10 points as Youngstown State went scoreless for four-plus minutes down the stretch after leading by as many as eight in the second half.

Horizon League Freshman of the Year Paris Bass added 11 points for Detroit (15-17).

Shawn Amiker had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Youngstown State (11-21)

Youngstown State built a 37-31 lead at halftime after holding Detroit to 10-of-28 shooting (35.7 percent).

Detroit advanced to play No. 4 Cleveland State on Friday in Valparaiso, Ind.
