AMES, Iowa (AP) Iowa State says that athletic director Jamie Pollard had successful open heart bypass surgery on Tuesday.

Pollard suffered a heart attack on Monday while watching his daughters at a track meet in northeast Iowa. Pollard was transferred from a Waterloo hospital to the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, where he had the surgery.

Pollard was in intensive care on Wednesday and is expected to remain hospitalized for several days.

Iowa State has appointed associate athletic director David Harris fill Pollard's role while he recuperates.
