Hampton upsets Norfolk State 75-64 in MEAC semis

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Quinton Chievous had a season-high 23 points with 16 rebounds and Hampton upset No. 2 seed Norfolk State 75-64 on Friday night to advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.

Saturday's MEAC final will match sixth-seeded Hampton (15-17) with No. 5 seed Delaware State (18-16). The Hornets upset top-seeded North Carolina Central 63-57 in the other semifinal game.

The Pirates took the lead for good at the end of the first half with the last four points for a 36-33 advantage. Hampton stretched the run to 10-0 to start the second half with an early nine-point lead.

Reginald Johnson's layup with 7:11 left gave Hampton its biggest lead at 57-43. But Norfolk State (20-13) answered with a 7-0 run and got as close as 67-62 on D'Shon Taylor's free throws with 42 seconds left. Hampton made 6 of 6 free throws from there.

Taylor led the Spartans with 16 points.
