North Carolina survived a late comeback bid to upset No. 3Virginia in an ACC tournament semifinal, 71-67 on Friday night, knocking out last year's conference tournament champions and potentially jeopardizing the Cavaliers' bid for a No. 1 seed.

The Tar Heels led 30-23 at halftime and held off a late Virginia comeback that was led by guard Malcolm Brogdon, who scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half. The Cavaliers were the ACC tournament's top seed while North Carolina was ranked No. 5.

The Tar Heels were led by guard Justin Jackson, who had 22 points and four rebounds. Jackson also made two free throws with nine seconds left in the game to give UNC a comfortable five-point lead.

On Saturday, UNC will play the winner of Friday night's game between the Duke Blue Devils and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
