Watch: Maryland beats Valparaiso on stripped ball in final seconds

Fourth-seeded seed Maryland defeated No. 13 seed Valparaiso 65-62 Friday after Terps guard Varun Ram stripped the ball from Keith Carter in the final seconds and it was stolen by Evan Smotrycz.

​The referees did not call a foul on the play, which sparked some criticism on social media.

Ram, who has only played 55 minutes all season, had just entered the game for the final possession. Two Terrapins starters had already fouled out.

Maryland went up 65-61 after Dez Wells made a layup and a free throw 1:44 remaining. With one minute remaining, the Crusaders' Tevonn Walker got fouled and made one of two free throws to make it 65-62. 

After Wells missed a jumper, Valparaiso took a timeout with 14 seconds remaining and had a chance to tie the game, but Carter was stripped before he could get a shot off. 

Wells, Melo Trimble and Jared Nickens led the Terps with 14 points apiece.
