Nevada has selected Eric Musselman to become its next basketball coach, the school announced on Wednesday. A five-year contract for Musselman will be presented to the Board of Regents on Thursday, the school said.

Musselman will replace David Carter, who was fired earlier this month after posting a 98-97 record over six seasons.

"Having known Eric for most of his life. Nevada is getting not only a quality coach but an outstanding person who will be fully entrenched on campus and in the community," Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said in a statement released by Nevada.

"He is a proven winner and has outstanding basketball knowledge to go along with his over the top work ethic. Having a background in both college and the NBA, I’m sure he will install an aggressive up-tempo style that will help attract top high school players. His strength of player development while incorporating analytics within the program will give Nevada a leg up on the new age of college basketball."

Musselman, 50, previously served as an assistant at LSU and Arizona State and has also had several stints as a professional head coach, including with the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings.

Nevada went 9-22 and finished in 10th place in the Mountain West conference. The Wolf Pack have not made the NCAA tournament since 2007.
