North Carolina football embraces argyle pattern in new uniforms
Basketball can’t have all the fun at North Carolina. While the famed hardwood team has used the argyle pattern since 1991, North Carolina has adopted the look as at least a secondary identity for all 28 varsity teams, including the brand-new football uniforms unveiled April 20.
The Carolina blue and white argyle pattern plays on the collar and down the side of the pants for all three uniform color choices—blue, white and black—for the football team.

As part of the updated identity that debuts this fall, the school will have consistent colors, logos, lettering and numerals across all the sports. The interlocking NC logo, which dates back to the 1800s, gets a full update that includes retooling it for size and scale. The argyle stands as the secondary identity for all sports. And don’t be surprised to see the foot logo pop up from time to time, too.
The use of Carolina Blue dates back to 1795 when the dialectic (blue) and philanthropic (white) debating societies chose their representative colors. UNC will officially use navy blue, black and metallic silver as part of its secondary color palettes. The football team most heavily favors black, creating a third jersey with that color, but also uses navy blue as an accent on the Carolina Blue uniform.
