Four years ago today, a series of deadly tornadoes ripped through Alabama, leaving dozens dead and tearing a hole in the hearts of the state's residents. The destruction was felt acutely in Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama, where several students died. Yet April 27, 2011 also gave birth to a new sense of loyalty and pride in the Crimson Tide sports teams, who in addition to being affected deeply by the tragedy also began the literal and symbolic act of helping an entire state heal.
