Georgia Tech, Boston College to open 2016 season in Ireland
Georgia Tech and Boston College will open their 2016 college football season in Dublin, Ireland, Georgia Tech announced.
ESPN first reported that the two teams would play in Ireland on Sept. 3 of that year.
The teams have not played since 2012, with the Yellow Jackets leading the series 6-2.
The game will take place at Aviva Stadium at 12:30 pm local time, or 7:30 am ET, and is scheduled to be televised on ESPN2. The game will be only the third ACC game held outside of the United States and seventh college football game to be placed in Ireland.
"I'm excited for our guys to have the opportunity to experience playing in Ireland," Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson said. "Our players really enjoyed it at Navy when we played in Dublin in 1996. It'll be something they remember for the rest of their lives."
The game will serve as a conference "home game" for Boston College.
Georgia Tech made room for the game on its schedule by pushing back its opening week contest with Mercer to Sept. 10.
In 2014, Penn State and Central Florida played a regular season football game in Dublin's Croke Park in what was dubbed the "Croke Park Classic." The Nittany Lions defeated the Knights 26–24.
In 2012, Notre Dame played Navy at Aviva Stadium, with the Irish winning 50–10.
Boston College last played a football game in Ireland in 1988. The Golden Eagles won the game at Dublin's Lansdowne Road against Army 38–24.
