Appalachian State running backs coach Chris Foster has resigned, according to a source.

Foster, 32, had held his position with the Mountaineers the last three seasons, overseeing a 1,000-yard rusher in each of those campaigns. Prior to that, he coached running backs at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, for eight seasons. He had been a deft recruiter for Appalachian State and seemed poised to land a Power Five assistant job.

Under third-year coach Scott Satterfield, the Mountaineers posted a 7-5 record in 2014, their first season as a full-time FBS program. They return an FBS-high 20 starters this season, including star junior running back Marcus Cox, who rushed for 1,415 yards with 19 touchdowns last year.
