Former Connecticut linebacker Jefferson Ashiru has transferred to Maryland, the Terrapins announced on Friday.

Ashiru is a graduate transfer and will be eligible to play the 2015 season.

In nine games last season for UConn, Ashiru recorded 47 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. As a sophomore in 2013 he made 58 tackles (8.0 for loss) with one sack.

Ashiru was recruited by the Huskies when Maryland head coach Randy Edsall was at Connecticut. Edsall left for the Terrapins in 2011.

“I’m really excited to join the Maryland football program and have the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten Conference,” Ashiru said. “I have known Coach Edsall and was also recruited by [Maryland defensive backs coach] Darrell Perkins, so those relationships played a key role in my decision to come to Maryland. Coach Edsall is a tremendous leader who cares deeply about his players. I’m looking forward to furthering my education and continuing my football career for a great university.”

ELLIS: Wiscy's next star RB already here?

The Terps finished 7–6 last season in their first year in the Big Ten.
