The University of North Dakota has narrowed its list of potential new nicknames to seven. The school is seeking to replace the Fighting Sioux nickname, which it was forced to abandon because of the NCAA's ban on Native American mascots.

The seven finalists are Fighting Hawks, Green Hawks, Nodaks, North Dakota, North Stars, Roughriders and Sundogs, according to the Grand Forks Herald.

North Dakota has played without a nickname since 2012 and that option is still a possibility.

The school solicited suggestions from the public and announced a long of possibilities last month, including some that were quite humorous. The list was trimmed to 15 and then to seven. It could be narrowed down further by the nickname committee before a winner is selected by public vote.
