The Texas Longhorns have approved the sale of beer and wine at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium during the 2015 college football season, the university announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Fans of legal drinking age can purchase alcoholic beverages starting at Texas' Sept. 12 game against Rice

"Fan safety and enjoyment remains our number one priority as we work through the process of expanding beer and wine sales into all seating areas of the stadium," Texas athletics director Steve Patterson said.

"During our extensive pilot, we found fans and staff handled the situation responsibly and we had no negative issues or situations. We will continue to monitor the service closely."

Texas' beer-selling pilot program debuted at baseball games in 2014. It had been strongly considered for a number of years under athletic director DeLoss Dodds.

West Virginia University reported a $520,000 profit from its first season selling beer at football games in 2011. Texas is expected to earn more than that sum as Darrel K Royal Stadium holds 40,000 more fans than West Virginia's Milan Puskar Stadium.
