Central Michigan football coach John Bonamego announced on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with cancer in his left tonsil.

Bonamego said the cancer was discovered early and is “very treatable.” He informed his team of the diagnosis on Thursday morning.

The 51-year-old Bonamego will continue to coach while he receives treatments but will make some adjustments, and he tweeted that he will be on the field for the Chippewas' opening game on Sept. 3 against Oklahoma State

CMU hired Bomanego as its head coach in February. He spent the last two years as a special teams coordinator for the Detroit Lions and previously worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins
