Four-star 2016 wide receiver Steven Smothers has committed to West Virginia, he announced Wednesday.

The 5-foot-11 Smothers is ranked as the No. 26 high school football player in the nation by Rivals.com. He chose West Virginia over Nebraska, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and Florida State, among others.

“Blessed and proud to say I'm committed to West Virginia University,” Smothers tweeted Wednesday.

West Virginia was Smothers' top choice throughout his recruiting process.

“West Virginia is ahead by a long stretch ... I've been to the school a million times and it's the same coaches that have been there since I got the offer,” Smothers previously told Rivals.com. “That's the school I am the most comfortable with.”

In three varsity seasons at Franklin High School, Smothers has amassed 2,190 yards and 46 total touchdowns.

He is the 17th commitment, and second four-star recruit, in West Virginia's class of 2020.

The Reisterstown, Md. native could also see time at special teams, in addition to wide receiver, while with the Mountaineers.
