The former five-star recruit was expected to be sidelined for much of the season as he recovered from shoulder surgery, but counting him out completely will be a blow to Seminoles' linebacker corps, which was already lacking in depth.

Thomas has not played much for Florida State since he entered as the No. 2 outside linebacker of the 2013 recruiting class. He was suspended for the first half of the 2014 season after failing a drug test. He was ejected during Florida State's Nov. 22 game against Boston College for targeting, and then suspended for the following game against Florida.

Thomas has also dealt with shoulder and ankle injuries throughout his abbreviated career.

Across two years, Thomas has played in 13 games and amassed 30 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss.

If he returns in 2016, Thomas will be a junior with two remaining years of eligibility.

Florida State opens its season against Texas State on Sept. 5.
