North Carolina linebacker Tyrell Tomlin has been ruled academically ineligible and is no longer enrolled at the university, the school announced Wednesday.

Tomlin, a native of Marietta, Ga., was rated on Rivals as a four-star inside linebacker and ranked No. 16 at his position nationally in the class of 2014. He played in 10 games as a true freshman last season and made four tackles.

Tomlin entered the preseason listed as a backup at strong-side linebacker, and was expected to be in the mix for playing time. His biography on UNC's website reads that he “should take a step forward” this season and should compete for a starting job. Sophomore Cole Holcomb is now listed as the strong-side backup.
