Notre Dame freshman cornerback Shaun Crawford will miss the 2015 season with a torn ACL, coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday.

The former four-star recruit sustained the injury during practice on Wednesday morning.

Kelly said that Crawford, who at 5'8", 180 pounds is the smallest player on Notre Dame's roster, impressed coaches with his knowledge of the game during fall practice, and was already taking reps with first-team players.

“He knows our defense already,” Kelly said, according to 247 Sports. “He knows our calls at the nickel position. He’s already helping our safeties in certain situations in terms of overriding some calls. The kid’s a smart football player. He gets it. He’s just got a knack for the game.”

Crawford's injury is the second season-ending injury to a member of Notre Dame's defense in the last week. Defensive tackle Jarron Jonessuffered a season-ending MCL injury on Saturday.

Matthias Farley is slated to return as starting cornerback for the second season in a row.
