South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier named Connor Mitch the Gamecocks' starting quarterback Tuesday, according to multiplereports.

Mitch, a redshirt sophomore, is a former four-star recruit. Last season, he completed 2 of 6 passes for 19 yards. Mitch won the job over junior Perry Orth, redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia and true freshman Lorenzo Nunez.

The Gamecocks went 7–6 last year, with an Independence Bowl victory over Miami to finish the season. South Carolina will count on Mitch to make up for the production of the graduated Dylan Thompson, who threw for 3,574 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2014.

Mitch ended his high school career ranked second in North Carolina history in yards, attempts, completions and touchdowns. He chose the Gamecocks over Alabama, LSU, Auburn, North Carolina and others.
