USC will begin the second year of the Steve Sarkisian era on Sept. 5 against Arkansas State. The Trojans finished 9–4 last season, capped by a Holiday Bowl win over Nebraska. Quarterback Cody Kessler is back for his senior season and begins the campaign with Heisman Trophy hype. Blossoming dual-threat star Adoree' Jackson should see time on the offensive end as well as in the defensive backfield. The Trojans open the Pac-12 season against Stanford on Sept. 19.

Arkansas State opens its season with tough tests against USC and Missouri in preparation for its Sun Belt conference slate. The Red Wolves finished 7-6 last season (5–3 in conference play), falling to Toledo in the GoDaddy Bowl. Senior quarterback Fredi Knighten and senior running back Michael Gordon return to anchor the offense.
