Junior transfer Greyson Lambert will start for Georgia in Saturday’s season opener against Louisiana-Monroe, the team announced Monday.

“Lambert is going to start the game,” Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt said after practice Monday. “There may be others that get in the game, but he’s the starter. It’s been a very, very close competition and it’s still being contested. But at this point, we felt it was wise to name the starter and get him the reps with the No. 1 unit.”

Lambert transferred to Georgia from the University of Virginia in July, and beat out redshirt sophomore Brice Ramsey and redshirt junior Faton Bauta for the spot.

The Georgia native threw for 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season for a Virginia team that was 5–7.

Lambert was ranked the No. 23 quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com in the class of 2012.
