Wisconsin opened its season with a 35–17 loss to Alabama in Arlington, Texas. Despite the loss, the Badgers received a positive performance from quarterback Joel Stave, who has struggled with confidence issues in the past. Stave completed 26 of 39 passes for 228 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. However, at running back, Wisconsin struggled to fill the hole left by Melvin Gordon. The Badgers only managed 40 yards on the ground across 21 carries.
Miami (OH) opened its season with a 26–7 win over Presbyterian. Redhawks quarterback Drew Kummer completed 14 of 19 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. The Redhawks also succeeded with a two-headed rushing attack. Alonzo Smith ran 12 times for 86 yards and two scores, while Kenny Young added 59 yards on 10 carries.
