After an embarrassing 38–3 first-week loss to Notre Dame, Texas head coach Charlie Strong is switching up play-calling duties.

Strong promoted receivers coach Jay Norvell on Tuesday, handing him offensive play-calling power and demoting co-offensive coordinators Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline. Texas compiled just 163 total yards of offense against Notre Dame.

Norvell spent the past seven seasons as an assistant at Big 12 rival Oklahoma, four of them as co-offensive coordinator.

Watson, the quarterbacks coach, and Wickline, the offensive line coach, will remain at their posts. Watson was the Longhorns' primary play-caller and held the same role at Louisville under Strong.

"We have to get this program on track," Strong told reporters. "We have to do a better job of coaching. There's no reason for us to go out and perform at the level we've been performing. There's no reason at all."
