The Navy Midshipmen get their first real test of the season in the East Carolina Pirates. The Midshipmen come into the game having picked apart Colgate 48–10 to open the season. Running back Chris Swain led the Navy offense, carrying the ball 11 times for 126 and a touchdown. Running back Quentin Ezell added two touchdowns to go along with 44 yards. Eleven Navy players carried the ball in the game.

The Pirates will try to bounce back after suffering a narrow 31–24 defeat at the hands of the Florida Gators. Quarterback Blake Kemp threw the ball 54 times, completing 34 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns. The Pirates running game was nonexistent, as they actually the game with negative yardage. ECU opened the season with a 28–20 win over Towson
