Boston College QB Darius Wade out for season with broken ankle
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College quarterback Darius Wade is expected to miss the rest of the season with a broken left ankle, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Wade is expected to have surgery this weekend and be out for nearly three months.
The sophomore passer injured himself in the fourth quarter of Boston College’s 14–0 loss to No. 9 Florida State on Friday night. He is in his first season as the Eagles' starter. Boston College coach Steve Addazio was pessimistic Friday night about the rest of Wade’s season. “It doesn’t look good,” he said in his press conference.

Eagles true freshman Jeff Smith is in line to start over third-string quarterback Troy Flutie, the nephew of Boston College legend Doug Flutie. Smith is a dynamic runner and electric athlete but inexperienced. He rushed for 89 yards against Howard in the Eagles' 76–0 win last week. Smith made a cameo against Florida State, rushing for eight yards on two carries and throwing an incompletion on his only attempt. Addazio also played Flutie in the fourth quarter Friday, and there’s a chance both will play as Boston College searches for ways to jumpstart its offense. Flutie, a redshirt freshman, brings the experience to run the whole offense. Smith has more mobility and potential for explosive plays, which the Eagles clearly lacked in gaining 195 yards Friday night.
Boston College hosts Northern Illinois next Saturday. There’s a good chance Wade could receive a medical redshirt—known as a hardship waiver—and preserve a season of eligibility, as he played in less than three games for the Eagles this year.
