Eastern Kentucky redshirt freshman Joey Kraemer died Sunday in a car crash, the university announced Monday.

Kraemer, a 19-year-old defensive end, was pronounced dead following an accident in which he hit a tree in Madison County, Ky.

“The news that we lost one of our own is devastating to me, our team and our coaches,” Eastern Kentucky head coach Dean Hood said. “We pray that God will give strength to Joey's family during their time of mourning. Joey will truly be missed by all of us he touched, not only because of what he accomplished on the football field, but because of who he was as a person and the impact he made on our lives.”

A University of Texas-El Paso transfer, Kraemer redshirted last season before coming to Eastern Kentucky. He had yet to play for the Colonels this season.

Kraemer, a sports management major, was a 2013 Associated Press Southwest All-District IV second team honoree at Archbishop Alter High School in Dayton, Ohio.

The Kentucky Wildcats will host Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night and honor Kraemer's memory before the start of the game.
