Former NBA Commissioner David Stern told an audience at a forum in New York City that he agrees with Adam Silver's suggestion that sports gambling should be legal in the United States, reports John Brennan of The Bergen Record

“I’m with Commissioner Silver,” Stern said. “There should be federal legislation that says, ‘Let’s go all the way’ and have betting on sports. It’s OK. It’s going to be properly regulated.”

While Stern is in favor of allowing betting on athletic events, he believes that it should be a matter of federal law, and not decided on by state legislation.

“If it’s subject to 50 individual states, you have every state representative who thinks he has a perfect idea — that’s problematic.”

Silver first announced that he is in favor of legalizing sports betting in November 2014.
