BYU has suspended starting outside linebacker Sione Takitaki for the rest of the season for an unspecified violation of team rules, the school announced Thursday.

Takitaki, a sophomore, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor theft this summer for allegedly stealing athletic equipment from the school’s women’s soccer and track facilities while working as a custodian. The case earned him a one-game suspension to start the season. He accepted a plea bargain last week and was sentenced to 12 months probation and ordered to pay a $680 fine.

Takitaki has been disciplined by the team previously, once for getting in a fight and once for skipping practice.

Takitaki played in 11 games as a true freshman last season, totaling 19 tackles and three sacks. He had played in six games this season with 21 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

The Cougars (5–2) host FCS Wagner on Saturday.
