Top 25 Picks: Breakout opportunities for Tar Heels, Cougars

Sometimes it takes a while for some of the most surprising teams in the country to be revealed.

North Carolina and Washington State have quietly moved into position to have big seasons and contend for conference titles. With victories this weekend, the Tar Heels and Cougars will start to make some noise.

North Carolina (6-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) is at No. 23 Pittsburgh (6-1, 4-0) on Thursday night. The winner moves into first in the ACC Coastal, where Duke looks to be the only other serious threat to reach the conference title game.

The Tar Heels have the ACC's top offense and maybe the most overlooked quarterback in the country in Marquise Williams. The dual-threat senior is averaging 261 yards of total offense per game and has accounted for 14 touchdowns, numbers not much different than Clemson star Deshaun Watson (269 ypg and 18 TDs).

Washington State will have a far more daunting task if coach Mike Leach is going to take the Cougars' turnaround to the next level.

Washington State (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) hosts No. 8 Stanford (6-1, 5-0), which has won six straight since a puzzling opening loss to Northwestern.

Not surprisingly, Leach's team is throwing more passes than any in the country (56.3 per game). Luke Falk is the latest Air Raid quarterback to benefit from Wazzu's passing obsession. The sophomore is averaging 412 yards per game, second in the nation.

Leach is 17-27 with one postseason appearance in three-plus season in Pullman, Washington. This might qualify as the biggest home game the Cougars have played under him.
