Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett loses summer scholarship after arrest
Two days after receiving a one-game suspension for an OVI citation, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has lost his scholarship for next summer, head coach Urban Meyer said at a press conference Monday.
Barrett will lose “summer aid,” which will not affect him this semester or next semester, a school spokesman said. Meyer said Barrett will have an opportunity to earn his scholarship back.
“All of his concern was about the team,” Meyer said. “Ever since I’ve known J.T., it’s been, ‘I just want to help this team.’ He feels like he let this team down.”
Barrett was cited early Saturday morning on a misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle while impaired, registering a blood-alcohol concentration just above 0.08, Ohio’s legal limit for drivers age 21 or older. Because Barrett is 20, the legal limit for him is 0.02.

Cardale Jones will start at quarterback in place of Barrett when the 8–0 Buckeyes meet Minnesota on Saturday, but according to Meyer, Barrett has the chance to earn his starting role back.
Making his first start of the season last week, Barrett completed 14 of 18 passes for 223 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the 49–7 win over Rutgers.
He has completed 66.1% of his passes this season for 472 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing for 329 yards and seven scores.
