Four-star point guard Charlie Moore commits to Memphis
Four-star recruit Charlie Moore has committed to Memphis, he announced Thursday.
Moore, a 5'11" point guard from Morgan Park High School in Chicago, is rated No. 57 overall in the 2016 class by Rivals.com. He chose Memphis and head coach Josh Pastner over California and VCU.
The Tigers were in need of backcourt help, with guards Ricky Tarrant and Kedren Johnson both entering their final year of eligibility. Moore should be able to compete for minutes immediately – Memphis brought in five guards in their 2015 class but will have openings to fill in the rotation.
Moore, a two-time state champion at Morgan Park, becomes the first Chicago-area player to commit to Memphis since former Simeon point guard Derrick Rose. A quick, shifty ballhandler with strong playmaking skills and a consistent stroke from outside, he greatly raised his stock on the summer circuit with the Mac Irvin Fire team and holds a reputation as one of the top players in the city.
“I chose Memphis because it was a great situation for me to come in right away and contribute to the team,” Moore told reporters. “I also felt great about the coaching staff. Coach Josh [Pastner] and [assistant] coach Damon [Stoudamire] have been wonderful in this process. I also feel that coach Josh will get the best out of me as a player and continue to challenge me like coach Nick [Irvin] has done for me the past four years.”
Moore averaged 15.8 points per game and shoot 39% from deep on Nike’s EYBL circuit over the summer.
In October, Memphis obtained a commitment from junior college forward Jimario Rivers.
