Troy defeats NAIA Reinhardt 97-82 behind hot shooting

TROY, Ala. (AP) Wesley Person and Jordon Varnado combined to score 54 points as Troy held off NAIA Reinhardt 97-82 on Sunday.

Person, a sophomore, matched his career-best from last season with 28 points. Varnado a freshman, scored 26. And they were accurate - Person sinking 10 of 13 shots, including three 3-pointers, and Varnado made 11 of 16 from the floor. Troy (2-0) shot 73.7 percent from the field (14 of 19) during the first nine minutes of the second half. The Trojans made 38 of 68 shots total.

Kelton Ford added 11 points, a perfect 4 for 4 from the field.

The 97 points is the most scored by Troy under second-year coach Phil Cunningham.

Corey Ricks scored 22 points for Reinhardt (4-2), Justin Zachary adding 12.

Varnado also grabbed 10 rebounds as the Trojans out-rebounded the Eagles 47-34.
