Peters has double-double, Valparaiso beats Oregon St. 63-57

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) After a big road win over a Pac-12 opponent, Valparaiso guard Shane Hammink wasn't shy about the Crusaders' goal for the season.

''We're playing well together, chemistry is good. . We want to get as far as possible in the NCAA Tournament,'' Hammink said.

Alec Peters had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Valparaiso beat Oregon State 63-57 on Tuesday night.

Hammink and Tevonn Walker added 15 points apiece for Valparaiso (6-1).

Coach Bryce Drew said he felt ''blessed'' that his team got a win on the road after losing 73-67 to then-No. 25 Oregon on Sunday, fading late in the second half.

''This stretch is very tough for a lot of Pac-12 teams, anyone who does this,'' Drew said after winning his 100th game as the Crusaders coach.

Gary Payton II had 25 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for Oregon State (4-1).

Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle criticized his team's lack of transition defense.

''They were a very mature, very tough veteran team. It just exposed some of our early weaknesses. But it is early, and we'll work on those things,'' Tinkle said.

Valparaiso led 34-25 at halftime. Jubril Adekoya made four free throws and Hammink made a layup to stretch the Crusaders lead to 48-31 with 12:28 remaining.

Stephen Thompson Jr. made two 3-pointers as part of a 13-3 surge to pull the Beavers to 61-55 with 35 seconds left. Peters split a pair of free throws, Thompson missed a 3-point attempt, and Hammink made a free throw to make it 63-55 with 15 seconds left.

Payton dunked with nine seconds left to cap the scoring.

Valparaiso took a 15-8 lead after going on a 9-0 run, capped by a Walker 3-pointer at the 12:27 mark. The Crusaders stretched the lead to 29-21 on an E. Victor Nickerson dunk. Payton made a layup and Malcolm Duvivier a pair of free throws before Peters made his second 3-pointer just before halftime.

The Crusaders opened the second half on a 14-6 surge. The Beavers answered with a 9-2 spurt to pull to 50-40 midway through the second half. Payton scored six points and Tres Tinkle made a 3-pointer during the span.

Duvivier's layup pulled the Beavers to 60-51 with 1:21 remaining.

FAMILY TIES

Drew is the third member of his family to serve as head coach of Valparaiso. His father, Homer Drew, and brother, Scott Drew, also led the Crusaders. A Drew has been in charge of the program for the last 27 years and the family has led Valparaiso to 490 victories and 14 postseason appearances.

FITTING IN

Hammink, a junior guard who sat out last season after transferring from Louisiana State, is just starting to find a rhythm with the Crusaders, Drew said. ''Very talented, very explosive young player,'' he added.

Oregon State: The Beavers two road wins this season equal their entire total of away victories from last year. ... The Beavers only lost twice at home last season. Oregon State came into the game shooting 41.8 percent on 3-pointers and averaging 8.3 baskets from long range. The Beavers made one 4 of 13 from long range on Tuesday. ... Freshman Drew Eubanks had seven rebounds and five blocks, but missed his only shot attempt. ... The Beavers have scored 70-plus points in their four wins.

Valparaiso: Last year, the Crusaders won a record 28 games, as well as the Horizon League regular season and tournament titles. ... The Crusaders advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time since 1996.
