Nebraska players not charged after investigation into alleged rape
No charges will be filed in connection with an alleged rape said to have occurred in the home of Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong and wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp, reports the Associated Press.
Jim Peschong, Lincoln Police Chief, and Joe Kelly, Lancaster County attorney, said that the evidence found was not sufficient to support filing charges.
Kelly said in a press conference Wednesday morning that filing charges “would require proof beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime had occurred.”
The alleged victim is a 20-year-old woman. She claims she was assaulted in the home on Nov. 15, and informed the police that she knows the suspect.
There were six people in the home at the time of the alleged assault, including Armstrong, Westerkamp and roommate Trey Foster. According to the police chief, all six people in the house at the time were contacted regarding the situation.
At the time of the initial accusation, Armstrong said he and his roommates were “confused.”
“From what we’re hearing, everything was consensual,” Armstrong said.
The university released a statement on Wednesday noting that it was aware of the latest development in the case and that there would be no change in the status of any of the players.
The Cornhuskers (5–6) will play their final game of the regular season against the Iowa Hawkeyes (11–0) on Friday.
