LSU coach Les Miles says job speculation has been a distraction
LSU head coach Les Miles said that he has “no idea” about the status of his position with the program amid rumors that the school may buy out his contract following the end of the season, reports David Ching of ESPN.com.
Addressing the media at his weekly press conference on Wednesday, Miles said that he has not talked to athletic director Joe Alleva about the security of his job. He did say that he an Alleva meet each year after the season, and that he expected this years’ meeting to come soon.
While coaches and programs often have to deal with rumors of hiring and firings, Miles said that the intense speculation about his job that started after a 38–17 loss to Ole Miss last week has been unusually distracting.
"Certainly we've run into distractions before, but this seems to be a pretty prevailing and evident distraction," Miles said.
LSU is coming off three-straight losses for the first time since 1999 and currently is unranked. Miles has won two SEC titles and a national championship since joining the program in 2005. He has a 110–32 record at the school, but is going to miss the 10-win mark for the second year in a row.
He is under contract until 2019 and a buyout would cost the school roughly $15 million.
LSU (7–3) will take on Texas A&M (8–3) in its regular season finale. A loss would give the Tigers a fourth-place finish in the SEC West, tied with 2014 for the worst conference performance in Miles’ tenure.
