SWAC honors Grambling's Williams, Alabama State's Berry

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Grambling State quarterback Johnathan Williams is the Southwestern Athletic Conference offensive player of the year and Alabama State linebacker Kourtney Berry earned defensive honors.

The league announced the All-SWAC teams and individual awards on Wednesday after voting by coaches and sports information directors.

Alcorn State wide receiver Marquise Warford is the newcomer of the year and Mississippi Valley State receiver Booker Chambers was named the top freshman.

Williams led Grambling State to its first Western Division title since 2011 while leading the FCS with 36 touchdown passes. His 2,910 passing yards was tops in the league.

Berry's 130 tackles led the SWAC and ranked fifth nationally.

Southern had 10 All-SWAC picks, including five first-teamers.
