South Carolina names Will Muschamp head coach

Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has been hired as the new head coach at South Carolina, the Gamecocks announced Sunday.

SI’s Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans reported Saturday that Muschamp had accepted the job. 

Muschamp will follow in the footsteps of recently retired coach Steve Spurrier, becoming the second-straight South Carolina coach to have previously served as the head coach at Florida.

Muschamp coached at Florida from 2011 to 2014, compiling a 28–21 record before being fired. He led the the Gators to an 11–2 record in 2012, but his lost at least five games in every other season and never finished better than third in the SEC East.

He became Auburn fourth defensive coordinator in as many seasons following his departure from Florida. The Tigers rank 68th in points given up per game and 90th in total yards per game this season.

Muschamp served as the defensive coordinator at Texas from 2008–2010 before heading to Florida. 

South Carolina finished the 2015 season 3–9, its worst finish since going 0–11 in 1999.
