Syracuse falls to Georgetown in first game without suspended Boeheim
Syracuse fell to Georgetown 79–72 on Saturday in the team’s first game without head coach Jim Boeheim this season.
Boeheim, who is in his 40th season at the helm of Syracuse’s program, was suspended by the NCAA in March after an investigation found he had committed violations dating back to 2001. They included extra benefits, academic misconduct, impermissible booster activity and failure to follow NCAA drug testing policy.
The 71-year-old will miss six non-conference games and three ACC matchups in total due to the suspension. Boeheim is not allowed to have any contact with his team until Jan. 9, when he is set to return to the sideline against North Carolina. Before Saturday, the coach had missed only three games since 1976.
Saturday’s game marked the first meeting between the schools since the Syracuse left the Big East for the ACC. Boeheim had coached in each of the school’s 73 games against Georgetown since 1976, when he took the position.
Syracuse (6–2) plays Colgate (2–4) on Tuesday.
