Auburn D-coordinator Will Muschamp agrees to be South Carolina coach
Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has agreed to be South Carolina’s new head coach and is expected to be introduced Monday, according to sources.
Muschamp would return to a head-coaching role after one season coaching Auburn’s defense. Under Muschamp, the Tigers improved their yards allowed per play from 5.7 to 5.5 and held opponents to 21 points or fewer five times but went a disappointing 6–6 this season.
Prior to Auburn, Muschamp coached Florida for four seasons, compiling a 28–21 record, including a 17–15 mark in SEC play. He led the Gators to an 11–2 campaign and a Sugar Bowl berth in 2012 but won just 10 games over the next two years and was fired at the end of the ’14 season. Muschamp would now annually go head-to-head against his former school and his successor, Jim McElwain, in the SEC’s East Division.

Muschamp’s previous coaching experience includes serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas from 2008–10, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Auburn from ’06–07, assistant head coach of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins in ’05 and defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at LSU from ’01-04.
He would replace legendary South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who resigned in October after a 2–4 start. The Gamecocks finished with a 3–9 record this season under interim coach Shawn Elliott.
Spurrier had an 86–49 record in his 11 seasons at South Carolina.
