Former Texas Tech running backs coach Mike Jinks has been named Bowling Green’s new head coach, the school announced Tuesday night.

Jinks brings only three years of college coaching experience to the table, having spent the past three season with the Red Raiders under coach Kliff Kingsbury. Before joining Texas Tech, Jinks was a successful high school coach at Cibolo Steele High School, where he spent seven years. He also coached at various other Texas high schools.

Jinks helped Texas Tech running back DeAndre Washington rush for 1,000 yards in 2014, the first Red Raider to crack 1,000 yards on the ground in more than a decade. Washington then rushed for 1,455 yards this season, leading the Big 12.

Less than a day after Bowling Green defeated Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship Game, Syracuse hired Falcons head coach Dino Babers as its new coach. Bowling Green defensive coordinator Brian Ward was set to serve as interim head coach for the team’s bowl game against Georgia Southern on Dec. 23. Thayer Evans of Sports Illustratedreports that Ward will also be joining Babers at Syracuse.
