Alabama State pulls out 63-60 win over Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) Jamel Waters scored 18 points, Steve Rogers added 16 and Alabama State had its best defensive game of the year to defeat Jacksonville State 63-60.

Waters' free throw with 48 seconds left put the Hornets (4-4) up 60-53 but the Gamecocks (3-9) quickly closed it to 61-60 on JaQuail Townser's 3-point play with 14 seconds left.

Waters calmly made two free throws two seconds later and Townser's 3-pointer was off the mark with three seconds left.

Townser scored 14 points and Jeremy Watson and Cam Biedscheid had 13 each for Jacksonville State, which had a 12-point lead in the first half and led 30-25 at the break.

Alabama A&M, which was allowing opponents to shoot 52 percent overall and 39 percent on 3s, held the Gamecocks to 40 percent, 3 of 16 from 3-point range.

The Hornets, who have been outrebounded by eight a game, won the boards 44-34.
