University of South Carolina trustees has approved the naming of the new Gamecocks’ indoor practice facility after former coach Steve Spurrier and his wife.

Spurrier announced his resignation as head coach of South Carolina’s football team in mid-October. At the time, the Gamecocks were 2–4 to start the season. Spurrier was in his 11th season as head coach.

“It’s time for me to get out of the way and let somebody else have a go at it,” he told reporters.

Co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Shawn Elliott served as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. South Carolina finished 3–9.

Former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was named the team’s new head coach on Dec. 6.

Just before Muschamp was hired, South Carolina removed the 80-foot banner of Spurrier that once hung outside of Williams-Brice Stadium. Spurrier is still honored inside of the stadium as the school’s all-time winningest coach.
