Miami Dolphins' Phil McGeoghan to join East Carolina coaching staff
Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan will become East Carolina’s wide receivers coach, according to a source.
It’s a return to the college level for McGeoghan, who has spend the past four seasons with the NFL’s Dolphins, first as the assistant wide receivers coach before being promoted to his current position in November. He played with new East Carolina head coach Scottie Montgomery on the Denver Broncos from 2001–02.
McGeoghan came to the Dolphins from South Florida, where he coached the Bulls’ wide receivers for three seasons. He served as the offensive coordinator at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I., in 2008 after a year at his alma mater, Maine, working with the Black Bears’ tight ends and wide receivers.
The 36-year-old McGeoghan played wide receiver for Maine from 1998–2000 and signed with the NFL’s New York Jets in ’01. He spent four seasons in the NFL with the Jets, Broncos, Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints and also played for the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe.
A Feeding Hills, Mass., native, McGeoghan joins the staff of Montgomery, who took the East Carolina job earlier this month after serving as Duke’s associate head coach, offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the past two seasons. Like McGeoghan, Montgomery also has NFL coaching experience from coaching wide receivers for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2010–12. He replaced Ruffin McNeill as the Pirates’ head coach after McNeill was abruptly fired earlier this month following a 5–7 season.
The Pirates ranked 55th in the country in total offense (414.6 yards per game) and 75th in scoring offense (27.4 points per game) this season.
