Sophomore quarterback Will Grier plans to transfer from Florida
Florida quarterback Will Grier met with coaches last week and will transfer to another school, a source told SI.com Saturday. Bob Redman of Scout.com first reported Grier's transfer.
The sophomore from Davidson, N.C., went 6-0 as Florida's starter, but he was hit with a one-year suspension in October after testing positive for a substance on the NCAA's banned list. Per NCAA transfer rules, Grier must sit out a year at his next school. He already redshirted in 2014, so he would have two years to play beginning with the 2017 season.
The Gators replaced Grier with sophomore Treon Harris, who went 4-3 as the starter. Given Florida's inability to move the ball in the final weeks of the season, coach Jim McElwain likely will seek a replacement for Harris. Luke Del Rio, who has already had stops at Alabama and Oregon State, is one candidate. The son of Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio is in Gainesville and sitting out this season per NCAA transfer rules.
Florida also has two freshmen quarterbacks enrolling for the spring semester. Feleipe Franks of Crawfordville, Fla., flipped to Florida in November after previously being committed to LSU. Kyle Trask of Manvel, Texas, committed to Florida in July and also will begin classes next month.
“Will came to me about exploring his options to transfer,” McElwain said in a statement via the Gators Twitter account. “We will support him and help him in anyway we can. This has been very difficult on him and obviously he is looking for a fresh start. We will always be there for him as will all Gators.”
