COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) Maryland coach DJ Durkin has hired Walt Bell to be his offensive coordinator.

Bell served as offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas State the last two seasons. Under his direction, the Red Wolves averaged 40 points a game this year.

In his 26 games overseeing the Arkansas State offense, the Red Wolves amassed at least 300 yards in 24 games and surpassed 500 yards on 11 occasions.

Durkin called Bell ''one of the brightest offensive minds in college football.''

Durkin was hired as Maryland's coach earlier this month. He replaced interim coach Mike Locksley, who was offensive coordinator under Randy Edsall.
