Columbia handles Howard 72-59

NEW YORK (AP) Luke Petrasek scored 16 points with 11 rebounds and Columbia handled Howard 72-59 on Monday.

Maodo Lo had 15 points, Grant Mullins added 13 points and Kyle Castlin chipped in 11 for the Lions (9-5). Columbia shot just 39 percent overall, but was 11 of 25 from beyond the arc and made 15 of 20 from the line.

Howard (7-7) was led by James Daniel with 36 points. Daniel, the nation's leading scorer, entered play averaging 28.4 points. Daniel was just 2 of 10 on 3-point attempts, but made 16 of 17 free throws. Howard shot under 26 percent from the floor.

Daniel hit a 3-pointer 5 1/2 minutes in to give Howard a 10-7 lead, but Columbia closed the first half on a 12-4 run and led 38-25 at intermission.

A 9-3 run out of the break stretched the lead to 47-31 and Howard never threatened after that.
