No. 20 Texas A&M beats Cal Poly 82-63

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Freshman Tyler Davis led a balanced Texas A&M offense and he's looking ahead to starting to play in the Southeastern Conference.

Davis matched his season-high of 18 points and three other Aggies scored in double figures two others had nine in an 82-63 victory over Cal Poly on Tuesday night.

''I'm excited,'' Davis said. ''Our team is really good. I think we can come out as the top team in the conference at the end of it. We just have to go with (coach Billy Kennedy's) game plan and keep playing hard, live with the results at the end of the day.''

The Aggies (10-2) led by as many as 22 points and the Mustangs never got closer than nine points in the second half.

Davis matched the 18 points he scored on Nov. 15 against Southeastern Louisiana.

Kennedy said the freshman center has yet to reach his potential.

''He's impressive,'' Kennedy said. ''Eighteen points, eight rebounds in 24 minutes. I thought we got him the ball but we can get him the ball more.''

Senior Joel Awich, who entered the game leading Cal Poly (6-7) in scoring at 11.7 points per game, was helped off the court with 14 minutes remaining in the game, unable to put weight on his left ankle. He was put in a walking boot on the bench and did not return.

Coach Joe Callero said the Mustangs may begin Big West play without Awich.

''We aren't really encouraged by that,'' Callero said of Awich's injury, ''Two of the coaches saw him step on a foot, that's what you worry about when stepping on a foot as opposed to rolling the ankle. . He was in real good pain.''

Danuel House, A&M's leading scorer this season, finished with 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. He was just 2 of 10 from the free throw line.

Cal Poly entered the game committing a Big West-leading 10.4 turnovers per game, but the Mustangs committed 14 on Tuesday, 11 in the first half, which the Aggies converted to 21 points. The Mustangs had their lowest first-half scoring since Dec. 14 as they trailed 44-29 after 20 minutes.

''Wish we had a little more preparation,'' Callero said. ''Thanks to our great storms that hit us, we spent an entire day getting here and lost an entire day of practice. I told our guys we had to wake up right away because A&M was perfectly ready.''

In addition to a victory in the turnover margin, the Aggies held a 10-0 advantage in fast break points, a 32-22 advantage in points in the paint, and shot 49 percent to Cal Poly's 39 percent.

Senior guard Reese Morgan led Cal Poly with 16 points and fellow senior Brian Bennett had 13, six within the final 3 minutes of the first half.

TIP-INS

Cal Poly: In all six of the Mustangs' victories, Cal Poly has shot for a higher field goal percentage than their opponent. In all seven losses the Mustangs have trailed in that statistic.

Texas A&M: Freshman Kobie Eubanks joined the active roster for Texas A&M on Tuesday, though he did not see game action. A late addition to the 2015 signing class, Eubanks is 6-foot-5 guard and considered to be a consensus top-100 recruit.
