Maryland freshman Diamond Stone scored a career-high 39 points to help the No. 4 Terrapins rally past Penn State 70–64 at home on Wednesday.

The 39 points set a Maryland record for points scored by a freshman, breaking Joe Smith’s mark of 33, which he set against Rider in 1993. The rest of the Terrapins combined to score 31 points against the Nittany Lions.

Stone totaled the 39 points on 10 of 15 shooting and made 19 of his 25 free throw attempts. He also grabbed 12 rebounds and added a steal.

Penn State led by as many as 13 points with 6:40 remaining, but Stone scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to six. He later made a game-tying layup and was responsible for seven of Maryland’s final 10 points down the stretch.

Terps guard Melo Trimble had a rough shooting day, going 3 of 15 from the floor, but made two key three pointers late and finished with 10 points.
